How To Set Up an E-commerce Store

Have you always wanted your online store? This can be a confusing process if you are new to it. However, with some help, it can be easy.

Here is a step-by-step guide:

Research your market

Market research is one of the most important things you have to do before you start your store. You need to figure out who your competition is, who are the most important influencers in your industry and so on.

Research your opportunities and weaknesses compared to other stores on the market.

Create a product list

“The first thing you should do is obviously, setting up a product list. Figure out what it is that you really want to sell,” says Andy Grue, a business consultant at 1Day2Write and Britstudent.

It could be based on your personal experience – you had a back pain and you came up with this great product that helps the pain. It could be that you saw a gap in the market and decided to fill it with your products. Maybe you came up with a way to make your favorite product better and now you want to be their competitor. Or you just saw that some products sell well and you wanted to try the market out.

No matter what made you choose those specific products, your mission is to list them. Start with a select few and then move to have more of them on the list. Evaluate your choices carefully and invite someone to help you with that.

Create product descriptions and photos

Once you are sure about your product choices, you can move on to actually do something about it. For one, start by hiring a professional photographer who can take great pictures of your product.

“Phone camera photos will hardly cut it in the competitive online market world and you should be aware of that. You need the right lighting and the right setting to make your products jump off the page.”, says Dan Benson, marketing manager at Writemyx and Australia2write.

Next, you’ll need good product descriptions. For this, a professional copywriter would be the right person to call but you can also do it yourself if you read up on copywriting a bit before starting. The descriptions need to be compelling. Choose a few key features of your product and talk about the results that they create. Then describe the benefits of those results. This will make your product shine and present it in a good light for the customers.

Figure out your pricing

Now that you have great images and descriptions, it’s time to figure out your pricing. This part is difficult for most new e-commerce store owners. Some of them doubt that their product will sell and then place the price too low and some are overly confident and put the price too high.

The best thing to do is stay in the middle. If you have different tiers of products, you can create a pricing plan with three versions or you can just put a price on those products separately. For this, you’ll need to do some research on what the competitors are doing and what the people are willing to pay for it. It’s possible that a survey or an opt-in of some sort may help you make a decision.

A good piece of advice is to create some sort of discount for the first week or month just so you can get started with the customers in the right way.

Set up your website

There are several options when it comes to starting your e-commerce website. You can start with WordPress.org site with an e-commerce plugin or go straight to Shopify,  Etsy and so on. A good recommendation is to use Pipefy to organize your process and automate parts of it as well.

There are other options like OpenCart, which is free.

Pick one that works well for you and the one you really like, based on your preferences.

Create a business plan

A business plan is essential and it will cover most of these points. Research is a big part of it – figuring out your market, audience, and competitors. Next, you should create a financial plan that will predict some of your future expenses and profits.

Create a description of your store and so on.

This is not going to be there for other people, but more so as a list of things that you need to do in order to get to your goals.

Choose merchant services

Merchant services are services that will enable you to receive money from your customers. It’s the way that they will pay. Most companies go for PayPal which is simple and most people have it. It’s easy to set up and use as well.

Social media

Finally, you need a way to market your products and social media is the perfect place for that. You can easily create these pages and share interesting posts about your store or your products. Social media is essential if you want to sell your products.

Setting up an e-commerce store is not that simple but it’s not that hard either. All you need is some practice and good planning before you start. Hopefully, these tips will help.
